ALEX NEIL MSP CONDEMNS STAMP PRICE HIKE
Airdrie and Shotts MSP Alex Neil has condemned the hike in First Class Stamps, which comes into force this week. The MSP has warned that the increase would price small local businesses in his constituency out of the first class market.
The more than 30 percent rise from 46p to 60p is around 10 times the rate of inflation.
The increase comes as Ofcom suggest there should be no cap on prices for the majority of Royal Mail’s services, including business post, bulk mail, and large letters and parcels sent second class.
Alex Neil said:
“This will be a serious blow to our local businesses that rely on the postal service. The results of this rapid inflation could make small businesses less competitive and will add to the stress of an already difficult economic climate.
“I am worried that this inflation busting hike will price small businesses out of the first class market. Essentially, the Universal Service Order will now be restricted to second class postage for small businesses.
“This spike in prices could be devastating to the many small businesses in Airdrie and Shotts. The UK Government must take urgent action to protect our postal services and small businesses, in light of these changes.” |
