Scotland's new crime campus in Gartcosh moved a step closer this week as Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill confirmed that the contract for the first phase of building work has been awarded to Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd.
Central Scotland MSP Alex Neil has welcomed the news as good for the area and critical in the fight against organised crime which is blighting many communities in Lanarkshire.
Work will begin later this month on the first part of the £82 million project - significant investment in the fight against serious and organised crime. The first phase is expected to be completed in February 2011 with work on track for the campus to be operational in 2012.
Mr Neil said:
"I warmly welcome this significant investment in Gartcosh for this new crime campus which I hope will help drive organised crime out of Lanarkshire and out of Scotland.
"Serious and organised crime is a blight on so many communities here in Lanarkshire.
"I am delighted that the contract with Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd will mean North Lanarkshire Council will be involved to achieve wider community benefits within the area, including work experience for 14-16 year olds and apprenticeships for school leavers. This area is in desperate need of this kind of investment in work experience and employment opportunities so this Scottish Government investment comes at an important time."
