Neil demands answers from NLC on Council Tax discounts
North Lanarkshire Council does not plan to introduce a scheme to offer Council Tax discounts to Council Tax payers who have added energy efficiency measures to their homes until 2011, according to Alex Neil MSP.

Mr Neil contacted the local authority after South Lanarkshire Council recently introduced their own scheme, as part of the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. Mr Neil was told by a local service manager that it was unlikely the scheme would be introduced before the end of the year.

The Central Scotland MSP, and Scottish Government Minister for Housing & Communities, has now written to the Chief Executive and Leader of NLC to demand answers.

Mr Neil said:

“While South Lanarkshire Council residents are set to benefit from Council Tax discounts if they introduce energy efficient measures to their homes, those in the North have to wait until 2011.

“I have written to North Lanarkshire Council to ask why this is the case when the legislation demanding such a discount scheme was passed last year.

“I am sure Council Tax payers here in North Lanarkshire will be asking why their local authority is not stepping up to the plate and encouraging energy efficiency in return for discounts.”
