Alex Neil MSP has welcomed official statistics which show that North Lanarkshire Council has started building houses for the first time in 10 years.
According to the local authority new build starts, North Lanarkshire Council started 20 properties in 2009, the first since 1999 when 30 were started by the Council.
Mr Neil says he is delighted to see council house building start again:
“It is crucial that North Lanarkshire Council builds new houses to ease the waiting list problems we have here. I hope that the substantial funding North Lanarkshire has received from the Scottish Government will allow them to continue building council houses.
“The Scottish Government is doing all it can to help local authorities like North Lanarkshire build new homes. We are reforming the Right to Buy legislation to encourage local authorities and housing associations to build, I know that is being welcomed by Councils across Scotland.
“The total lack of investment in local authority housing stock by previous Scottish administrations means that in North Lanarkshire we are facing a severe shortage in affordable housing for rent. I hope that the new approaches being taken by this Scottish Government will help people here in North Lanarkshire get off the waiting list and into a warm, affordable and efficient home.” |
