Alex Neil MSP has said that by delivering a record number of police officers the Scottish Government is doing all it can to make Lanarkshire streets safer.

Official figures show that police numbers have jumped by 1039 across Scotland since the SNP came to power and nearly half of those officers are employed by Strathclyde Police Force.

There are now 509 more police officers working in Strathclyde Police compared to 2007.

Mr Neil said:

“I am delighted that the Scottish Government has exceeded its ambitious target for police numbers ahead of time, despite being told by all sides that we would never be able to do it.

“An extra 509 police officers in the Strathclyde area can only be a good thing for the people of Lanarkshire who have to put up with all sorts of crime and antisocial behaviour.

“Strathclyde police has benefited from nearly half of the new recruits across Scotland, which shows how committed this Government is to the people living here.”
