Commenting Mr Neil said:

“People in Lanarkshire area of the Strathclyde Police catchment will be rightly worried about these firearm statistics which show there was an offence involving firearms occurring almost every three days across Lanarkshire.

“The news that 205 extra officers have been enrolled in Strathclyde Police in the last six months will be very welcome for people living in these areas.

“When the SNP came to power there was a pledge to increase police numbers by 450 before March 2009. What we are seeing is that commitment fulfilled and surpassed as these 205 officers get added to the 440 already in place.

“These police officer figures highlight how the SNP Government is delivering for the people of Lanarkshire to try and tackle offences, such as those involving firearms, and make the area a safer place.
