Central Scotland SNP MSP Alex Neil is concerned at the impact on car parking at Wishaw General Hospital if NHS Lanarkshire goes ahead with their plans to shut either Monklands Accident and Emergency Department or Hairmyres Accident and Emergency Department.
Presently there is a problem with car parking at Wishaw, and this is without the additional pressure that will be brought to bear on the site if an Accident and Emergency Department closes elsewhere, meaning thousands of extra patients going to Wishaw each year to access Accident and Emergency services there.
Patients and staff struggle as things stand, thus any closure will make the situation in future virtually unbearable.
Mr Neil said:
“Parking at Wishaw General is already very restricted and difficult, with visitors and staff often struggling to find a space in the car park there. This means that many of the local streets are filled with people accessing the hospital because parking provision is wholly inadequate.”
“The situation will become unbearable if NHS Lanarkshire gets its way with its crazy plan to shut either Monklands Accident and Emergency Department or Hairmyres Accident and Emergency Department, as thousands of additional people will descend on Wishaw each year, also looking for parking spaces in an already cramped car park.”
“This is just another example of why NHS Lanarkshire’s plans to shut one of the Accident and Emergency Departments are so ill thought out. Aside from the health arguments, we can see how difficult it will be for people to get parked at Wishaw General.”
“NHS Lanarkshire should therefore ditch the plans to shut a department, and in the meantime should expand parking facilities at Wishaw General to allow for those accessing the hospital at present decent car parking space.” |
